Boundary and West Kootenay Wildlife photography tours

A land of beauty and diversity

The Boundary and West Kootenays are situated on the border between two distinct biogeoclimatic zones - the open Okanagan dry belt and the heavily forested Kootenay regions. This creates the perfect “edge” effect that results in a remarkable landscape and wide range of animal and bird species. Biodiversity is the key to this region's rich ecology and abundant wildlife. We know all the best locations and times to see these incredibly diverse wildlife populations.

The variety of wildlife and scenic photo opportunities in our region is truly enviable.

Depending on the season and the weather you can expect to encounter black and grizzly bears, elk, moose, mule and white-tailed deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, badgers, marmots, skunks, raccoons, a variety of eagles, hawks, falcons, vultures and owls, a range of rare and endangered reptiles and amphibians, and the list goes on…

You will have access to our exclusive 25 acre private reserve where wildlife habitats and feeders are maintained specifically for viewing and photography, including a lighted outdoor studio used for filming night scenes in several TV wildlife docummentaries. Falconry demonstrations with a variety of trained and free flying hawks and falcons may also be available at certain times of the year.

What our customers are saying about "Wildlife of the West Kootenays"...

“We spent the most amazing afternoon of our entire Canada-Alaska trip with Paul Stone, our Canada Photo Safari’s guide. In just 4 hours we saw 6 bears including 2 brown bears 1 with cubs and 1 huge black bear with a tiny cub. We also saw a moose, turkeys, hawks, squirrels and some spectacular scenery. One of the brown bears climbed up a tree giving us some very exciting moments & incredible photo opportunities. We absolutely cannot wait until our next visit. Many, many thanks Paul.”

Craig and Trish Mollenhagen, Queensland, Australia

"In May of this year, a friend and I went on a 4 day photo-safari with Paul Stone, to learn about and photograph wildlife of the Kootenays. My friend is an experienced wildlife photographer, but for me it was the first time ever to attempt wildlife photography. I was simply expecting to get a feel for what wildlife photography is all about. I got that, and much more. Not only did I learn a lot about how to approach photographing wildlife in particular in the Kootenays, but I also got some beautiful pictures, something I wasn’t expecting to happen. Not only did Paul freely share knowledge about the animals and the area, and how to photograph it all, but he also became a friend. I wholeheartedly recommend Canada Photo Safaris to anyone interested in learning about wildlife photography, and about wildlife in the Kootenays, Ursula.”
