Canada Wildlife Photography TourCanada Eagle Safari

*New for 2009*

A 4 day shoot: Grand Forks, B.C. (or Spokane, Washington)
Dates: November through March
Group size: 7 (maximum)
Activity Level: Soft to Medium Adventure (easy to moderate difficulty with short walks over uneven terrain or snow and several hours sitting in blinds)

More eagles than any other photo shoot.

Concentrated populations of Eagles

When most people think of large and concentrated populations of eagles, they think of Alaska in winter and its bone chilling temperatures. In fact western Canada has the highest populations of eagles in the world and you don't have to travel as far north as Alaska to find them. In fall, eagles concentrate along rivers throughout southern British Columbia, following the spawning fish that is their primary food source. Both bald and golden eagles stay throughout the winter and spring to feed on the carrion of winter kill ungulates (deer) that are so abundant here.

We also have a good number of resident eagles that stay in our area all year to nest and raise their young. Eagle shoots are available during these summer months upon special request (please contact our director to set up one of these shoots).

Immature Bald Eagle

Completely wild eagles at fenced-in distances

We have spent considerable time and effort studying and working with these eagles and have developed a highly effective system of blinds (hides), decoys and calls to draw these magnificent birds into camera range. It is not unusual to have 20 or more birds, both bald and golden eagles, feeding and fighting over carrion at one time. On average, you can expect to see a dozen eagles per day, often with 3 or 4 birds feeding at a time. On slow days you may have to wait for several hours for the eagles to appear, but quite often they show up almost immediately upon entering our blinds due to our specialized, and exclusive use of, calls and decoys.

During this shoot we often get opportunities at a variety of other predators and scavangers including coyotes, bobcat, whiskey jacks, magpies, ravens and turkey vultures. There will also be plenty of time to photograph the local whitetail deer and bighorn sheep that are heavily concentrated on their winter range.

Convenience and value

We have eliminated the hassle of international flights for our US customers by providing the option of starting and ending your Canada Eagle Safari in Spokane Washington. You'll be picked up at your hotel, or at the airport, and cross the US/CAN border by ground transportation thus eliminating the need for a passport or going through the extra hassle of international airport customs.

What our clients have to say about their wildlife tour

"In May of this year, a friend and I went on a 4 day photo-safari with Paul Stone, to learn about and photograph wildlife of the Kootenays. My friend is an experienced wildlife photographer, but for me it was the first time ever to attempt wildlife photography. I was simply expecting to get a feel for what wildlife photography is all about. I got that, and much more. Not only did I learn a lot about how to approach photographing wildlife in particular in the Kootenays, but I also got some beautiful pictures, something I wasn’t expecting to happen. Not only did Paul freely share knowledge about the animals and the area, and how to photograph it all, but he also became a friend. I wholeheartedly recommend Canada Photo Safaris to anyone interested in learning about wildlife photography, and about wildlife in the Kootenays, Ursula.”
